Meeting Minutes July 11, 1996

What happened?

Well, our first meeting was a resounding success. (Not to say we didn't have a few bugs.) We of course had a wonderful run of it.

Known Bugs

  • Leeland's information on parking was incorrect the UW parking structure is open till 9pm. However, it was unanimously decided that the MBT facilities were wonderfully convenient for all. Additionally, the $2.50 charge for the after hours parking was voted negligable. So the directions web page will be updated to reflect this new data.
  • The security doors on the building lock up at 6pm. This however, will be easy to overcome. For this first meeting we solved the problem by posting signs and sending someone down every 10 mins to check for new attendees. We are looking into solutions now.
  • Directions need improvement. This can only happen with input from those who have problems. The directions will be updated as corrections/additions are pointed out.
  • Meeting Highlites

    1) Opening comments and introductions
Everyone said hello and we had about 50 mins of general social time.
    2) Discussion of meeting locations
The MBT facility was unanimously agreed to be excellent for our meetings.
    3) Discussion of meeting regularity and time
The proposed meeting day and time of one meeting per month on the second Thursday at 7:00pm was agreed to work well for scheduling. The next meeting is set for August 8th.
    4) Discussion of electronic discussions
For lack of a better topic this went over well. We discussed the available distribution methods for the SSG. CompBio will have servers for PGP public key distribution, net news groups, Majordomo mail list control and anonymous ftp. It was decided to stay with a general mailing list for now. The mail list will shift to Majordomo control when CompBio gets that system running. (The list address will remain the same.) If we get some SIGs (special interest groups) growing out of our main meeting we will discuss news group or alternate mail list support for them. Also, our web pages will be kept up to date and distribution of documents, programs and archives will be through the anonymous ftp server.
    4) Open forum for discussion of TBD
This went over even better. Topics ranged from past experiences with strange events, interview questions, local entertainment for geeks, and a possible offer from Pencom for co-sponsorship of the group (Pencom is considering providing occasional special topic presentations by some top industry leaders). More news to come at the next meeting on the Pencom support.
Finally, when the meeting broke up some of us went to The Outback Steak House and had a fabulous diner BOF (birds of a feather special discussion group this BOF's topic was 'gossip the dos and do nots' or 'I can top that!! Listen to this...') session.

    The Next Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for August 8th. The topic to be presented is "Data collection via WEB pages with CGI (or When can I stop manually updating these databases?!)" NOTE: We need someone to give this presentation. So check out our new presentations guide web page and if you feel like sharing your knowledge let us know!
