Meeting Minutes October 10, 1996

What happened?

Well, our fourth meeting was better than all of the previous meetings. The bugs list is down to just getting in. However, if meeting attendence keeps ramping up like this we'll have to start using the auditorium in the basement just to have enough room.

Known Bugs

  • The MBT building doors still lock up at 6pm. This must be. So we will make sure that someone will check the doors regularly (at least every 10 mins) for new attendees.
  • Meeting Highlites

    1) Opening comments and introductions
This was a standing room only meeting. Additionally we had a fabulous bonus of lots of socializing. As not only did Gordon follow the tradition of not be fully prepared for the meeting until that day, but he topped it. He worked on the slides at dinner just before the meeting and spent about 10 mins at the meeting finishing them off. Then Leeland had to run all over the building looking for an available printer that wouldn't choke on the overhead plastic sheets.

    2) Presentation by Gordon C. Galligher
"Domain Name System: An Empirical Perspective"

Gordon's presentation covered DNS extremely well. The primary focus of the talk was how name resolutions works, [non-]authoritative data, name domains, name zones, and types of name servers. He also managed to perform some magnificent feats of mental juggling due to a lot of questions from the group.

He is also our first speaker to actually provide an electronic version of his overheads and speaker notes. Which, thanks to the efforts of Jeff Welty, one of our regular attendees, the overheads have been transfered to html.

It was by far our best presentation to date and we are grateful to Gordon for taking the time to come up to Seattle to give it.

    3) Open forum
Pencom is still planning on become an official sponsor for SSG. Bruce and Leeland just need to hammer out the details. But, it should be noted that Pencom has been an tremendous supporter since we first started in July.

The next meeting will be on Sendmail being presented by Paul Forgey of MetaInfo, Inc., the company that brought us sendmail for NT.

    4) Closing
The meeting went so late (Gordon was very popular) that most of us just dragged ourselves out at the last possible moment.

    5) Dinner
It was 10:30 by the time we finally shut the doors and left. However, Gordon agreed to keep going for a bit more. So six of us went down to a Starbuck's coffee shop and all had various drinks with lots of caffine. This allowed us to discuss DNS on VAXs and other very strange configurations. We finally called it quits around midnight.

    The Next Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for November 14th. The topic to be presented is "Making Sendmail Work... (or Tricking Loki Made Easy)" by Paul Forgey of MetaInfo, Inc., the company that brought us sendmail for NT.
