The Seattle SAGE Group (SSG)
Seattle based special interest group for system and network administrators.
Meeting Minutes June 12, 1997
What happened?
The meeting was surprisingly low in attendence. However, Leeland reports that
a large number of people sent emails and called on the phone doing impersonations
of Homer Simpson (aka "Doooa!! I was planning on coming and forgot. Is there going
to be a follow up/repeat?")
Well for those who did come Jeff provided an excellent presentation. In fact he
even wrote us all a book from "O'Really & Associates", with the cover having
a picture of a Rat. For those of you who missed it. Sorry your just going to
have to buy it yourself later.
Known Bugs
Meeting Highlites
- 1) SSG Business
- We have confirmation that Michael Randall will be speaking in the October meeting.
- 2) Open floor comments and introductions
- The open floor discussion was based on a possible future presentation on
DHCP. The consensus was that DHCP is a security problem. However, we
will invite an expert speaker to address the subject.
- 3) Presentation by Jeff Welty of Weyrhouser
- "IPv6 Intro & Advances (or Can you get there from here?)"
I know I usually say this, but, this time it is doubly applicable. It was
an extremely well prepared and presented talk on IPv6 and what little is really
settled on. Jeff showed a folder 2 feet thick of the specifications, RFCs, and
white papers. He also thoughtfully provided them to web site WITH his presentation
in html format and ready for adding into the site. (Hint to future speakers.)
Jeff's Presentation and the technical papers referenced can be located

OK, OK!! And the Rat Book URL:

- 4) Closing
- The meeting blew apart on schedule. No closing comments for SSG business.
- 5) Dinner
- A small group who wanted to discuss IP and other topics found their way to
a nice 24hr Italian restruant in the UW district. (The food was great!) A few
(including Leeland) got some good drinks and the conversation flowed well to
about 11:30pm. The conversation rotated between various bad examples of things
done in the past to examples of how to get an outrageous IP packet constructed.
The Next Meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for July 10.
