I tried to add the OpenID plugin, but it gave me a meaningless error, and I can't figure out what to look at to troubleshoot this. If you know, please do let me know. Thanks for the other advice -- we'll see what happens.

My friend Zach pointed me to his blag when I asked him about the first question. He says replace the "-38" with a comma-separated list of the categories you want on the front page, and use category links for the rest. On the second point unaware of a complete Wordpress plugin to do it right, but there's a bunch of code snippets and a well thought out system at A List Apart. The third bullet point is actually implemented in Wordpress- if you publish an article with a future timestamp, the system will do exactly what you're looking for. Can I also make a plea to add the OpenID plugin to the site? OpenID may have trust issues, but it's more than adequate for blog comments (and if you get OpenID blog spam, then you'll have a piece of history on your hands).
